Playlists

divider

Here's a collection of playlists I've made so far, along with some lines from choice songs that really factor in to their place on these lists. These are ever-changing beasts as I find new music, get excited about it, and then decide it's not the right vibe six months later. So this page will probably change relatively frequently.

You can go over to the music page to see more about songs and music artists I connect to Devilman in general, as well as other general thoughts about music in relation to the franchise.

Something to keep in mind for this page: The reason these playlists evolved so much over the years is because my pattern is to make the playlist, and then listen to it at random points throughout my day when I'm looking for a certain music feeling. Because of this, there are some songs on here that have stayed on almost exclusively for that purpose. I plan to go through and filter out some things that I don't think really fit the point of the playlists later. For now, here they are in the forms they currently are on my Deezer.

To help with this, I notated which ones I feel strongest about having on each playlist, and gave my thoughts about those ones specifically. Plenty of these songs don't have thoughts next to them, and probably will be taken off the list at some point. But we'll see.

Crybaby

This playlist was the one I started when I first started getting into Devilman; specifically after watching Crybaby for the first time. At this point, it's evolved to really encompass the general vibe of this project, not just Crybaby vibes. I just never bothered changing the name.

Honestly I don't feel the need to. One thing I did like about Crybaby was that emphasis - the way it put a lot of work into presenting Akira as empathetic, emotional, and able to touch a lot of hearts in that regard. The way they did it felt a bit clumsy sometimes, but I think that's a really important piece to the larger picture. (I go into my thoughts on that a bit more on Akira's character meta page.)

Tender Possession, So Human

This one is more focused on Akira and Ryo's relationship. Ryo's concept of love and way of loving has been so warped, everyone (including himself) was under the impression it was long gone.

To me, Akira and Ryo loving one another is two things: acts of rebellion, and ruinous to them both. I'll go more in depth with that in both their character pages.

Title came from the idea of only knowing how to love someone in a way that is damaging; in a way that is viewing them as something that belongs to you, and only viewing them through the lens of how they make you feel.

There is something incredibly tender about their love, in that way. But it wasn't enough to save them. They cannot separate their love from who they are, and what they'll do.

List (in no particular order):

  • In the Woods Somewhere by Hozier

Dear, in the chase, there as I flew

Forgot all prayers of joining you

I clutched my life and wished it kept

My dearest love, I'm not done yet

How many years? I know I'll bear

I found something in the woods somewhere

  • My Love Mine All Mine by Mitski
  • The Record Player Song by Daisy the Great

    I need a dictionary

Someone look me up and define me

Please remind me who I'm supposed to be around you

So you will do what I want you to

  • Hands On The Water by Skyhill
  • That Unwanted Animal by The Amazing Devil

I'm the papercut that kills you

And the priest that you ignored

I'm the touch you crave, I'm the plans that you made

But fuck all your plans I'm bored

And can't you hear that scratching?

    I ask your eyes

  • Clementine by Halsey
  • Touch Me by Spring Awakening
  • Running Up That Hill by Placebo
  • I Come With Knives by IAMX

I never promised you an open heart or a charity

I never wanted to abuse your imagination

    I come with knives

    I come with knives

    And agony

    To love you

  • Hot Gum by Sofia Isella
  • The Judge by Twenty One Pilots
  • The Fruits by Paris Paloma

And now in your arms, you're faithless for you pitched me

Against your holy father, and it seems that I am winning

But I don't feel your hands grabbing my throat

    As you say

My love, are you the devil?

  • Me and the Devil by Soap&Skin
  • If I Had a Heart by Fever Ray

This will never end 'cause I want more

More, give me more, give me more

If I had a heart, I could love you

If I had a voice, I would sing

  • Arsonist's Lullaby by Hozier
  • Atlantis by Seafret
  • Ghosts Again by Depeche Mode

    Faith is sleeping

    Lovers, in the end

    Whisper we'll be ghosts again

    Heaven's dreaming

    Thoughtless thoughts, my friends

We know we'll be ghosts again

  • Eat Your Young by Hozier
  • Duet by Tatsuya Kato
  • SpecialZ by King Gnu

    "Get lost in me"

    自分を庇う言葉ばかりを

    いつまで言い聞かせるの?

    "Get lost in me"

    I love you, baby

  • Mama's Gun by Glass Animals
  • The Truth by 36 Questions

What's true for you doesn't have to be true forever

And sometimes the truth isn't always for the better

It's something that we aspire to

Or maybe that's something we say

Until it gets in the way

And you're just putting words on a feeling

  • Achilles Come Down by Gang Of Youths
  • Talk by Hozier
  • Blood In The Wine by Aurora

I was given a heart before I was given a mind

A thirst for pleasure and war, and hunger we keep inside

We fell from the sky with grace

And life gave us a sweeter taste

You can drink, you can feast

    There's beauty in your beast

  • Dinner & Diatribes by Hozier
  • NFWMB by Hozier
  • All I Wanted by Paramore

I could follow you to the beginning

    Just to relive the start

Maybe then we'd remember to slow down

At all of our favorite parts

    All I wanted was you

  • Just Tonight by The Pretty Reckless
  • This Is Love by Air Traffic Controller
  • From Eden by Hozier

    There's something wretched about this

    Something so precious about this

    Where to begin?

    There's something broken about this

But I might be hoping about this

    Oh, what a sin

Unnamed

This one was just an experiment in (mostly) 70s rock that I think fit Ryo's vibe. It's also fun to imagine these are songs Ryo and Akira would listen to over the years together - and in that way, maybe this would be in a timeline where the peak of their Devilman shenanigans happen in 1977 or so.

I don't know, they're just bangers and it's fun to think about.
